ZANELE MUHOLI: Information Station
November 5 – December 12, 2017

Part of Performa’s Biennial 17, the information station created by Zanele Muholi allows visitors to learn about LGBTQI rights in South Africa and Muholi’s long-term activism. This activation is a potent, interactive connection between South Africa and New York City. Zanele Muholi’s (b. 1972, Umlazi, South Africa) work, including her 2010 documentary Difficult Love, has been seen internationally at venues including Documenta 13, the Brooklyn Museum, Kunsthalle Wien Project Space in Vienna, and the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos. Muholi completed an Advanced Photography course at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg in 2003 and received her MFA in Documentary Media from Toronto’s Ryerson University in 2009. In 2006 Muholi founded Inkanyiso, dedicated to visual art, media advocacy, and visual literacy training for South Africa’s black LGBTI community.
