A Biased and Completely Unrepentant Guide to Writings on HomoArt
By Wayne Snellen

This is a short list of recommended reading on art as related to LGBT issues. I do not pretend to present a complete list but do consider the below recommendations as essential reading.

Out/Lines. Underground Gay Graphics from before Stonewall, by Thomas Waugh, 2002. Published by Aresnal Pulp Press, Canada.
This is a great read but I may be a bit biased because Leslie-Lohman is so well represented for which I thank Tom Waugh. Tom is one of the first to use LL extensively in his research. It is well written, researched, witty, provocative and timely.

The Nude Male. A New Perspective, by Margaret Walters, 1979. Published by Penguin Books.
This, strictly speaking, is not a book on homoart but it is well represented and discussed. This is one of the best and even though it was published in 1978 it is remarkable for its perceptive and frank open discussions of homosexuality in art.

Pictures and Passions. A History of Homosexuality in the Visual Arts, by James Saslow, 1999. Published by Viking Press.
A fabulous survey of homoart making the connections so many of us have been longing for - from antiquity to contemporary art.

Lesbian Art in America. A Contemporary History, by Harmony Hammond, 2000. Rizzoli.
A much needed and fulfilling book. Again it helps to fill in the gaps in an area where little has been written.

The Homoerotic Photograph. Male Images from Durieu/Delacroix to Mapplethorpe. Allen Ellenzweig, 1992. Columbia University Press.
A well written and researched book that should be on every photographers bookshelf.

Outlaw Representation. Censorship and Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art. Richard Meyer, 2001. Oxford University Press.
An outstanding and heavy compendium of knowledge about how entertwined our history is with prejudice and censorship.

A Hidden Love. Art and Homosexuality, by Dominique Fernandez, 2001. Prestel.
A big, lavishly illustrated book on homoart that one can leave out on the coffee table to spark tantalizing conversation.

The Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art, by The Guerrilla Girls, 1998. Penguin Books.
Full of interesting and little known facts about women in the arts and attribution of work.

Bibliography of Gay and Lesbian Art, by the Gay and Lesbian Caucus, College Art Association, 1994. Begun by James Saslow, Sherman Clarke, and many others. (It is being updated.)
This is an invaluable reference tool and clearly illustrates the fact that much has been written about the homoarts. The problem is that it is so scattered that it is difficult to garner its wisdom. Well, no more, due to this magnificant achievement. This should be on every bookshelf.

These are only a few books from the Leslie-Lohman library. The library is far from complete. We only have a very small budget to purchase books so if anyone is interested in donating pertinent books or authors who would like their writing to be represented in the LLGAF, you are welcome to donate them and we will be forever grateful. Remember, we are nonprofit and all donations, books, art, ephemera, etc., are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
