John Burton Harter
September 7, 1940 - March 15, 2002

JB (Burt) Harter was born in Jackson, Mississippi and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky where his father Dr. John Harter, established a practice in thoracic surgery.

Mr. Harter had degrees from the Univ. of Louis-ville, Louisiana St. Univ. and completed postgraduate work at the Univ. of Pa, Hebrew Univ. in Jerusalem, Univ. of Vienna in Austria and Arizona St. Univ.
Mr. Harter worked in the curatorial department of the Louisiana State museum and the Historic New Orleans Collections for 20 years. He served as Director of Collections at the state museum from 1986 till his retirement in 1991 at which time he chose to pursue his art full-time.

He had shown his work in Baton Rouge, San Francisco and at the LLGAF in NYC. In 1997 Mr. Harter published a slender volume entitled Encounters with a Male Nude. He was working on an expanded verson when he died.
