Douglas Holtquist, 2000

The Founder's Purchase Award for 2000 has been awarded to Douglas Holtquist for his bronze, I which was exhibited in the November/December 2000 show, Hard Heart, Cold Hands: Sculpture Now.

Douglas is a NYC artist who is also an ikebana master. He studied at the Sogetsu School in Tokyo. He has worked in ceramic clay, iron, and stainless steel, but prefers stone and bronze.

Douglas says that he, "was fascinated to learn that a samurai's status was determined, in part, by his success in arranging flowers before a battle.? He learned an ikebana with no limits that has given him the freedom to persue figurative sculptural work as well.

Robert Richards, 2001

The Founder's Purchase Award for 2001 was awarded to Robert W. Richards for his drawing, Will, which was exhibited in the August show, Boy Bordello.

Robert has been drawing in New York City for longer than he cares to admit. During the 70's and 80's he covered the French and Italian haute couture collections for the Chicago Daily News and incredibly, the Christian Science Monitor. Feeling that he'd drawn enough dresses, he moved on to corporate images, celebrity portraits and, naturally, porn.

Recent projects have included the posters for Al Pacino's "Hughie", the revival of Noel Coward's "Present Laughter" and the award winning packaging for Lena Horne's "We'll be Together Again" CD. He's especially proud of his long artistic association with the late Peter Allen from the triumphs at Radio City to the heartache of "Legs Diamond."

Currently his porn-star drawings and interviews can be seen in HX magazine, his story illustrations appear in Mandate, Torso, Playguy and Inches.

Robert regularly attends the Leslie-Lohman Erotic Drawing Workshop.
