An AIDS Primer,

ARTgroup Addresses AIDS is the first thematic exhibition sponsored by the ARTgroup for Gay and Lesbian Artists. It is also the first exhibition that we [LLGAF] have sponsored that specifically taps the creative energy of the tragedy of AIDS.

AIDS has affected all of our lives regardless of our sexual orientation. From "safer sex" to the slow agonizing deaths of friends and lovers, we have all been witness to the destructive force of this incurable disease. How AIDS has affected our lives, and our ways of coping with the magnitude of our fear, sorrow and loss is the theme of this exhibit.

From the simple act of rolling on a condom for protection to the practice of celibacy and abstinence, the fear of contracting the retro-virus that causes AIDS has changed the ways in which we enjoy and approach sex. Even the choice to ignore the hassle of practicing "safer sex" is a stance brought about by the need to examine the ways in which we confront this disease. This modification of our behavior toward sex has far reaching implications for our behavior towards each other as gay people and towards the population at large, as well as causing the national and world community to react to us as gay people and people with AIDS in both positive and negative ways.

It is the obvious and the subtle, the political and the obstinately apolitical that the ARTgroup Addresses AIDS show wishes to give a voice. It is ARTgroup's philosophy that all voices be heard. The travesty and decimation of this disease deserves a record of those voices.

Sixty percent of the sales from the ARTgroup Addresses AIDS will benefit The AIDS Resource Center (ARC) as a tribute and assistance to the afflicted.
