AN APPRECIATION...To Robert Jones...our former Director
It is with a mixture of regret and appreciation that we mark the December 31 [1995] resignation of our director, Robert Jones, who so ably picked up the reins of LLGAF at the time of the death of our first director and still sorely missed friend, George Dudley.
Bob made a genuine contribution to the growth and well-being of the Foundation in a period of difficult transition. He believed it was time to move on, particularly to concentrate on independent curatorship of special art events in a greater variety of venues. We look forward to working with Bob in the future.
AND A WELCOME...To Wayne Snellen...our new Director
Wayne joined us as a volunteer some time ago and brought his "computer genius" (although he disdains the description) to bear on our ever more complex art and artists data bank. With Wayne's tireless input we have developed the matrix of a rapidly growing arts resource in the George Dudley Archive at LLGAF.
Although it didn't take us long to realize that he was someone special, at the outset we did not know that Wayne possesses major qualifications for the post he assumed January 1 [1995].
Simply observing the authority, confidence, and sensitivity with which he approached every task at the Foundation started lighting up lights and setting off bells. We soon came to learn that his knowledge of art is extensive.
Although he suppliled no information until asked, we learned that he has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute (1974) and a Master's Degree in fine art from The Maryland Institute, Mt. Royal School of Painting in Baltimore (1976), where conincidently, George Dudley was a fellow student. Since coming to New York in 1977, he has been actively involved in "Artists Talk On Art," LLGAF, and ArtGroup.
Beyond Wayne's obvious organizational and curatorial skills, the most wonderful thing of all is that Wayne is virtually unflappable. In any gallery situation there is always a certain amount of stress, a little edge of crisis: that is chaos! But Wayne, an artist in his own right, whose work has been seen in many public exhibitons, always remains calm, organized, and blessedly civil.
It is therefore with something like pure happiness that we welcome Wayne Snellen to LLGAF as our new director. We look forward to working with Wayne for years to come.
