A Timeline of Gay and Lesbian Artists and History

Leslie-Lohman has taken on the daunting task of amassing a list of LGBTQ artists into a timeline to illustrate and increase the awareness of queer artists and their contributions. It is, of course, impossible to create a truly comprehensive list of our artist ancestors. We can never know all the names of people who labored anonymously in ancient courts and over the centuries in cathedrals and town halls, in palaces and pavilions — but we can be sure, given the very nature of art, that vast numbers of them were what we now call “gay.” This list constitutes a small but heartfelt act of gratitude and homage for what they did and what they have given us.

The list is in order by date of birth. Note that every name on this list is not necessarily gay but may be included for continuity and as a timeline marker.

This is an ongoing project that will never be finished. The web version (http://www.leslielohman.org/miles.html) can expand as it wants. However, the hard copy version, which will include approximatelly 500 known queer artists, is another matter. Selections for inclusion will be overseen by a panel of experts in queer studies and art history. Numerous full-color illustrations will provide a visual teaching aid helping students place artists in historical perspective, while an annotated resource listing will guide those interested in learning more.

The hard copy version of the timeline will be available in April 2005. It will be made available to the public in the gallery and to art students in queer studies art history programs, university libraries and anyone interested in the visual arts.

The list is maintained by Wayne Snellen and with special thanks to Tee A. Corinne for sharing her list of lesbian artists and for her continuing support of this project. Also to Charles Leslie who has made many helpful suggestions and notations. Thanks also to the many friends of Leslie-Lohman who have brought artists to our attention.
