Bhupen Khakhar, 1934 – 2003
India’s first openly gay artist died of prostate cancer on August 9, 2003. Known for his wit, sardonic humor and biting social satire he was also a writer. His subject matter consisted of kitsch, popular images and the common man.

 

Timur Novikov, 1958 – 2002
Russian gay artist who died of pneumonia on May 23, 2002. He worked in many materials and organized the New Academy of Fine Art and The New Artists who under his leadership became the most internationally recognized movement in St. Petersburg art in the last decade.
