Exhibition History

Click on a year below to go to that year's listing of shows and participating artists.

The first show took place in the Leslie-Lohman loft at 131 Prince Street in 1969.

Prior to THE FOUNDATION there was the J. Frederic Lohman, Ltd. Gallery at 55 Wooster Street (first floor). Then it moved upstairs and became the Leslie-Lohman Gallery at 485 Broome Street (same building — second floor) — at first both purely commercial enterprises — but established out of love and concern for art and eventually became an enclave for gay art that could not be shown in "normal" galleries due to its controvertial content. It closed in 1981 but continued sporadically in the below pictured space at 127B (basement) Prince St.

We are listing the exhibitions in those first two gallery spaces to show the continunity and long history in New York City, not only of the Leslie-Lohman involvement (which was the first) but also of a period in which gay art galleries flourished. At one time in the seventies there were as many as nine galleries devoted to "gay art" — all existing at the same time, including, Robert Samuel Gallery, ROB Gallery, Stompers, Foto, Stoned Wall Galerie, and the Thompson Gallery. But, alas, they all closed due to financial hardship, non-support, and the AIDS crisis — that is, all except one.

The 501(c)3 public nonprofit foundation, the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation, was incorporated in 1990.

Please note that due to the sketchy nature of record keeping in the early years there are several gaps in this list. As items are discovered they will be added and corrections made.
