CARLO PITTORE
(Charles Stanley)
1943-2005

Carlo Pittore (b. Charles Stanley, 1943-2005) was a prolific painter and internationally renowned mail artist who lived and worked in New York City, Southern Italy, and Bowdoinham, Maine. Over the course of his 40-year career Pittore created a prodigious body of work, adding his unique vision to the American figurative tradition. A pioneer of the mail art movement in the 1970s, he contributed pieces to over 1,000 mail art exhibitions and corresponded with such mail art luminaries as Buster Cleveland, Ray Johnson, and the iconic performance-artist, writer and publisher Bern Porter.

Pittore's work resides in numerous private and institutional collections, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art, the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, and the Portland Museum of Art.

SPECIAL NOTE ON THESE PAINTINGS
Prior to his forthcoming exhibition in November of this year, the LLGAF is making available a select group of Carlo Pittore's work at well below their list prices. While celebrated in his native Maine, Pittore is virtually unknown in New York and we are thrilled to have been chosen by the Carlo Pittore Foundation to present his New York premier. The sale of these works will help defray the costs of the forthcoming large exhibition, which will solidify his reputation as a foremost contemporary painter of the nude. If you are interested in any of these works, please call the gallery for the discounted price, which we have agreed not to publish. At the subsequent large scale exhibition of Pittore's work, everything will be available only at list price.
