Keith Haring 1958 - 1990 Keith haring grew up in Pennsylvania and moved to New York City at age 20 where he was heavily influenced by the urban scene, gay clubs, rap music, break dancing, and especially street art and graffiti. Haring began creating white chalk drawings on empty black advertising panels in subway stations often completing 30 to 40 pictures a day. By 1984 they were frequently stolen and sold. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he continued working until his death in 1990 at the age of 31. Considered one of the most emblematic artists of the late 20 th century, the Whitney Museum in New York hosted the first American retrospective of his work.
