Peter Berlin born 1943
Armin Von Hoynigen-Huene
German/American, performance artist and photographer

Born in Berlin during World War II, Peter Berlin became his own work of art. Possessed of a strikingly beautiful face and form and a constant state of sexual tension, he was a fixture on the streets of New York and San Francisco in the 1970s. He became famous for his, self designed, sexually provocative clothing and his virtually constant cruising. He starred in the film, Nights In Black Leather, (1972) which became an underground cult hit, and, That Boy, (1974) which was equally successful. He is a great nephew of the famous German fashion photographer of the 20s and 30s, George Hoynigen-Heune. Robert Mapplethorpe photographed him and Tom of Finland, Robert Richards, and Peter Flinsch - among many other artists - drew him. Mapplethorpe curated a show of his photographs called Split/Vision and in 2006 Berlin had a show at the Leslie/Lohman Gallery in New York. The 2005 film, That Man: Peter Berlin, tells his full story. He lives and works in San Francisco. (artist bio, LLBF, 2008)
